Interview #1: A “What’s the Future” Conversation with Trillin, Age 19

Thinking about the future can sometimes be hard for adults.  The older we get the more likely we are to look backward to find meaning.  This is one of the beautiful aspects of young people.  They look forward.   They organize around big unanswered questions, and we thought this year would be perfect to hear more from them.  Ryan Burke, Senior Partner, and L+D Co-Founder has committed to interviewing young people on camera all year long from different schools, different cities, and different backgrounds.  The goal of this project is to learn. Each month, we will publish some of this content with the hope that you will consider using what you hear to reflect and grow.  Listening can be a powerful intervention, and our hope is that this content helps you to think in new ways, and wonder about how young people are constructing the future right now in our schools.

This month, we want you to meet Trillin. Trillin is 19, and he is living in Atlanta, GA. He is on the tail end of his relationship with school, and we think you will enjoy hearing how he sees himself, the future, and his possible place in it.

Here are some ideas for how to use this content:

  • Watch individually and have a team or group reflect together on reflection questions.

  • Watch in a group, and then break people into smaller groups for discussion.

  • Give asynchronously, and have people reflect in a journal or in their own time.

  • Watch in a group and have the group generate reflection questions and then discuss those questions.

There is no wrong way to use this content, and here are some questions to get you going.

  • What are you hearing that feels important or compelling?

  • How does watching this make you feel, and unpack with your group the emotional experience of digesting the content?

  • Are there any parts of what you are hearing that you think relate to your job or the work you are involved in?

  • What surprised you?

  • Do Trillin's answers provoke any other curiosities or questions that you are interested in exploring?
